William R. Terpening's practice focuses on white collar and traditional criminal litigation in the federal courts, Fourth and Eleventh Circuit appeals, litigating complex civil business disputes, defense of professionals in regulatory matters, securities litigation (with experience defending against both private plaintiffs and the Securities and Exchange Commission), and general business counseling.
Mr. Terpening holds degrees from Brown University (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), Duke Law, and Duke's Graduate School (M.A., English), and clerked for Judge Graham Mullen, United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Before founding Anderson Terpening PLLC, he practiced securities and complex commercial litigation defense at a well-respected national firm.
He is licensed in Georgia and North Carolina, and is admitted to the Fourth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal. Among other organizations, he is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section. His legal writing has been published widely, including in the Charlotte Business Journal, Interim Report Magazine (North Carolina Association of CPAs), BNA's Corporate Counsel Weekly, the Banking and Financial Services Policy Report, and the Alaska Law Review, and he has commented in the Charlotte Observer, among other periodicals. Consistent with the Firm's core value of community and pro bono service, he regularly represents indigent clients in court-appointed criminal cases at both trial and appellate levels.
